Adobe Retires VIP: What VIP Marketplace Renewals Mean for You
Updated November 2026: the migration deadlines in this post have passed, and legacy VIP is now retired for commercial, government and education customers alike. We have corrected the dates and refocused the post on how renewals work under VIP Marketplace.
Adobe has retired its Value Incentive Plan (VIP) for commercial customers, who now buy and renew through VIP Marketplace. When we first published this post, the final commercial cut-off we reported was May 31, 2025; Adobe's own announcement put the retirement at the end of January 2025. Either way, that date has passed, and the government and education segments followed on 30 November 2025. If your organization buys Adobe licenses through a reseller today, every new order and every renewal runs under VIP Marketplace rules, and those rules are worth knowing before your next anniversary date.
Key Dates and Deadlines
Adobe's buying program announcement set out the timeline:
- December 2, 2024: Adobe stopped creating new VIP contracts for commercial customers. New commercial offers have been available only in VIP Marketplace since then.
- February 1, 2025: all new and renewal orders for commercial customers must go through VIP Marketplace.
- October 15, 2025: no new VIP contracts for government, education or LGA customers.
- November 30, 2025: VIP retired for the government, education and LGA segments.
- December 1, 2025: all new and renewal orders for those segments go through VIP Marketplace.
Transition to VIP Marketplace
VIP Marketplace keeps the familiar shape of VIP (one agreement, an anniversary date, licenses managed in the Admin Console) but automates more of the cycle. The points that matter most:
- Auto-renewal: annual licenses renew automatically on the anniversary date unless you act first.
- Named-user licenses and consumables: licenses are assigned to users in the Admin Console; most consumables expire on the last day of the license term, so unused balances do not carry over.
- Discount levels: buying 10 or more licenses in a term qualifies for a discount level, with larger levels at 50 and 100 licenses.
- 3-year commit: for a minimum of 10 licenses, paid annually, the price is set for up to three years (up to four for education and government).

How Renewals Work Under VIP Marketplace
Adobe's VIP terms and conditions set the renewal rules:
- Your anniversary date falls twelve months after Adobe accepts your initial order, and each license term runs to the day before the next one.
- Licenses renew automatically at the end of each term (section 4.2). The renewal is priced at the partner price in effect on the anniversary date, at your qualifying discount level, so the price can differ from last year's.
- Changes and cancellations must reach Adobe at least three days before the anniversary date (section 4.2). After that, the renewal goes through as it stands.
- Adobe sends a notice about auto-renewing licenses 30 days before the anniversary date. That notice is your real starting point, not the three-day cut-off.
- The seven-day grace period (section 4.3) applies to licenses you add in the Admin Console: your reseller must place the order within seven days, not the 14 days legacy VIP allowed, or Adobe removes them. It is not a grace period for a missed renewal decision.
- Returns are possible only within 14 days of the original order and only before the product is installed or accessed.
In practice, the default under VIP Marketplace is to keep paying for what you had. Any reduction has to be decided, agreed with your reseller and sent to Adobe before the cut-off.
Renewal Checklist for VIP Marketplace
- Find your anniversary date in the Admin Console and put a reminder at least 45 days before it.
- When the 30-day notice arrives, export the assigned licenses per product and compare them with actual use.
- Decide which licenses to keep, reduce or cancel, and check whether the quantity you keep still reaches your current discount level.
- If you are on a 3-year commit, confirm the committed quantity before reducing anything below it.
- Send the changes to your reseller in writing well ahead of the three-day cut-off, and ask for confirmation that Adobe has received them.
- Check that every license added in the Admin Console during the year was ordered within seven days.
- Use up or plan for consumables before the term ends, since most expire with it.

Implications for Adobe Customers
Legacy VIP can no longer be used for new orders or renewals in any segment. What remains is the work of running VIP Marketplace well: auto-renewal means unused licenses renew silently unless someone acts, and the three-day cut-off leaves no room for a late decision. Organizations that review usage before each anniversary date are the ones that avoid paying another year for licenses nobody uses.
