The bill

What drives the Gemini API bill?

Thinking tokens, cache storage and grounding all bill separately from the prompt you send.

Thinking tokens

Output prices include thinking tokens, and on Argon every token the model processes is counted, including internal tool instructions and function declarations when grounding.

Context caching

Cached input is a tenth of the input price on most models and a twentieth on Argon, and cache storage is billed by the hour: $0.50 per million tokens an hour on 3.8 Flash, $4.50 on 3.1 Pro Preview. Argon supports implicit caching only.

Batch, Flex and Priority

Batch and Flex run at half the Standard rate. Priority costs more: $3.60 input and $18 output per million tokens on Argon.

Long prompts

Gemini 3.1 Pro Preview charges the higher rate for prompts over 200,000 tokens: $4 input and $18 output instead of $2 and $12.

Grounding

Grounding with Google Search gives 5,000 free requests a month across Gemini 3 and newer models, then $14 per 1,000, with a default cap of 1,500 requests a day.

Free tier

The Flash models are free of charge on the free tier, where content is used to improve Google's products. Argon is not available on the free tier.

Where the surprises come from: one Gemini request can trigger several Google Search queries, each charged. Prices on Google Cloud's Gemini Enterprise Agent Platform may differ from the Developer API list. Source: Gemini Developer API pricing, as of 3 November 2026.

Workspace

Does Gemini in Google Workspace cost extra?

Gemini in Gmail, Docs, Meet and the other Workspace apps comes with the Workspace plan, paid per user. It is not billed per token.

Starter

Includes the Gemini AI assistant in Gmail and chat with Gemini, where company data is not used to train models.

Standard and above

Adds the Gemini assistant in Gmail, Docs, Meet and more, and Gemini Notebook with expanded access.

Google shows Workspace prices in local currency, so check them for your country on Google Workspace pricing. In LICENSEWARE, the Google Workspace SSO connector shows the SaaS apps people use, and the Gemini API connector covers the tokens.

Integration

Why we built a Gemini API integration

Google bills Gemini API usage to a Google Cloud billing account. A budget owner needs it next to the other AI vendors and the rest of the software estate.

Why teams choose it

A wide price range on one API, from Gemini 3.5 Flash-Lite at $0.30 per million input tokens to Gemini 4 Argon, with a free tier for the Flash models and grounding in Google Search and Maps.

What the vendor's tools show

Gemini API usage is billed to a Google Cloud billing account, where it is reported by project, often a project nobody in SAM or procurement looks at.

What they leave out

One vendor at a time. The OpenAI and Anthropic keys, the Copilot and Cursor seats and the SaaS estate sit elsewhere, and a project is not yet a person or a cost centre.

What our connector reads

  • Google Gemini: detailed token analysis and usage per user. Read by LCM and SIM.

In SIM

What does Gemini spend look like in SIM?

Software Inventory Manager (SIM) puts Gemini usage per user next to the rest of the software estate, and LICENSEWARE's LCM holds the contract side.

Cost per team

Token usage per user from the Google Gemini connection. Add the users up by team or cost centre and follow the total month by month.

Seats against use

Gemini usage per user beside the Workspace seats from the Google Workspace SSO connector, so the people who use Gemini and the people who pay for it can be compared.

Beside the estate

AI spend sits in the same inventory as SaaS subscriptions and installed software, so one review covers all three.

The contract side

LCM keeps the agreement, the seat count and the renewal date next to the usage, so a renewal starts from what was used.

More on AI cost management and every connection on data sources. Included in the Core plan, with no separate price.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

PriceHow much does the Gemini API cost?

As of November 2026, Gemini 4 Argon costs $2 per million input tokens and $10 per million output tokens, and Gemini 3.8 Flash $0.75 and $3.75. Gemini 3.5 Flash-Lite is $0.30 and $2.50.

Free tierIs the Gemini API free?

There is a free tier for the Flash and Flash-Lite models, where content is used to improve Google's products. Gemini 4 Argon is not on the free tier, and the paid tier does not use your content to improve Google's products.

ThinkingAre thinking tokens charged on the Gemini API?

Yes. Google's output prices include thinking tokens, so a model that reasons at length bills that reasoning at the output rate.

ChangesAre Gemini API prices changing?

Google's price list dates new rates for Gemini 4 Argon from 1 December 2026 and for Gemini 3.8 Flash and 3.6 Flash from 1 January 2027. Our post on the December change covers who is exposed and what to do.

WorkspaceIs Gemini included in Google Workspace?

Gemini features come with Workspace plans: Starter includes Gemini in Gmail, and Standard and above add Gemini in Docs, Meet and more. They are paid per user as part of the plan, not per token.

Per userCan I see Gemini API cost per user?

Yes. LICENSEWARE's Google Gemini connector brings detailed token analysis and usage per user into SIM, next to the other AI vendors and the rest of the software estate.
